About Us

Jenny & Diana became friends in Kindergarten when Jenny gave Diana a unicorn bookmark. They have remained best friends for over 25 years.

...fast forward...

Dream in Plastic was born in 2007, in a basement, in Brooklyn, New York. Obsessed with art and collecting vinyl art toys, the girls began a website that became a culmination of everything they loved & shopped for. Jenny & Diana wanted to have a store that offered all kinds of cool things they loved to give as gifts and collect.

They opened the current brick-and-mortar store in 2009, in Beacon, New York. They love Beacon for it's arts-rich community and super-cool people! Jen & Di knew right away that they wanted to leave room in the store to have a gallery space.

Dream in Plastic hosts a small party/opening reception on the second Saturday of every month when the art exhibit changes to something new (hint! hint! check the events page to see what's next! ahem).

About Diana

Diana's obsessive designer vinyl collecting habits have come in handy around the store, impressing her knowledge upon people and creating new addicts - umm... collectors, yes, collectors...

Once upon a time, she was the sole member of the shipping department, but since opening shop in Beacon, she has fallen in love with curating the gallery space. She is looking forward to creating some interestingly themed group shows in the future.

Diana remembers EVERYTHING about EVERYBODY. We assure you she isn't stalking you! However, there is a really good chance she remembers what you were wearing, what you bought, and what you talked about the last time you visited the store. Even if it was once, last year, for five seconds, when the store was packed.

She is also good at, enjoys, or is known for the following: dancing at people, saying inappropriate things to make you laugh, tripping over stuff,  making up weird sayings that sometimes catch on, forgetting what she is about to say, unicorns, ordering complicated cups of coffee, coffee in general, picking out gifts for people she doesn't know, El Caminos, drawing lurker cats (^..^)= = = = = , sushi, gluing things together and calling it art, entertaining other people's children, making playlists, weekly dinners with her brother, kicking your butt at Wii bowling, giving hugs that inevitably turn into slow dances, late night dinners that inevitably turn into doodling parties, pepper vodka, being too honest, making out, finding people she already knows on dating websites, going to Walmart in the middle of the night and trying on funny clothes next to the rack they came off of, being @-ed on twitter because she is too lazy to tweet her own one-liners, sleeping on the couch with her dog Bonnie, three day weekends, flirting, playing bass and saxophone, Karmann Ghias, not farting it out on the 3:05.

She does not enjoy/is afraid of the following: down escalators, storm troopers - actually anyone in costume, negativity, bunnies (not real ones of course - they are cute, this is actually a long story), touching cheap sheets (it gives her the willies in her teeth), dishonesty, non-resolution, being too warm, not having enough time in the day, the color coral, the dark, too small dining tables in restaurants, not knowing where she stands with someone, the 4th of July (not in an un-american way, she just thinks it is over done), bad mascara, being told what to do, field greens, apple pie, "real" sneakers, racism, sleeping with socks on, getting ketchup/jelly/syrup on her hands.

About Jenny

Unlike Diana, Jenny has a horrible memory. Please don't be offended when she doesn't remember you, even if you've made out... even if it was for 5 hours.

For the most part she doesn't wake up until the sun goes down & she spends her nights designing & coding websites and dreaming about traveling the world (and sometimes doing just that!). She gets all her news from watching the Colbert Report & is a wanna-be vegan but wonders how she will ever give up mozzarella (the inner Italy is strong with this one). She still wants to be an Oceanographer or Archaeologist when she grows up, but was too lazy to study science in college. She doesn't have a lot of cash but fulfills her shopping desires by picking out awesome products to sell at Dream in Plastic. She is also a vinyl toy collector (in recovery, but cannot always resist!). Also, operator of this fine online store.

She is also good at, enjoys, or is known for the following: spending her free time playing roller derby, finding meat-less meat replacements, getting shy when complimented on her dimples or freckles, taking thousands of photos - jennypix.com, driving fast, having a different tea for anything that ails you, convincing you to get an iPhone, obsessing over miniature versions of things (including mini shampoo, monuments she has visited, dogs & frogs), stopping the microwave with 27 seconds left, making friends with dogs that walk by, keyboard commands, wearing colorful shoes & wacky socks, guessing why your car is making that noise, getting lost in the computer for hours, espresso patron, collecting colored-vinyl records, collecting business cards, collecting old cameras, wearing those paper bracelets for days after the concert (& getting yelled at by Diana for it), rocking out on the drums, always trying to give you gifts just because she likes you (they really are the best gifts, EVAR), stickerboming, Volkswagens and Z cars, creating epic Google Maps for all her future adventures.

She does not enjoy/is afraid of: not having coffee readily available, dead batteries, phone calls from unknown numbers, doing dishes, putting away laundry, stepping on pushpins, her avocado allergy, committing to the perfect place to stick a sticker, stink bugs, songs that are titled "Untitled", speeding tickets, rejection, the color peach, waking up early, potholes, the rabbits from Watership Down, the blatant & inappropriate overuse of the fonts Comic Sans & Papyrus, when design clients want things "open... yet, contained", being too cold, 3 feet of snow when she has somewhere to be, parallel parking, butterflies (not real ones - those are pretty, but artistic representations of them), cucumber burps, asparagus pee, people that are afraid of NYC & the fact that now only rich people can afford to live there.

Her favorite music includes:
Massive Attack, Metric, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Torche, White Stripes, Fugazi, Silversun Pickups, Band of Horses, Less Than Jake,Trentemoller, Dead Empires, Mazzy Star, Pinback, Sex Bob-Omb, Spinnerette, Distillers, Postal Service, Deftones, One True Thing, Gorillaz, Autolux, Smashing Pumpkins, Queens of the Stone Age, Death Cab for Cutie, Foo Fighters, Dead Unicorn, Be Your Own Pet, Descendents, Violent Femmes, Belly, Thievery Corporation, Sleater-Kinney, AFI, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Beck, NOFX, Portishead, Zero 7, Wu-Tang Clan, Depeche Mode, Raconteurs, Tegan and Sara - this list could go on and on.

About Jeska

Jeska is the lovechild of Dream in Plastic. Whether shopping, working or lurking, it's always a blast to have her around and get a tie breaker opinion, usually followed by a nonsensical theoretical standpoint about robots. Known to leave notes and Polaroids EVERYWHERE in the store, she's marked her territory as Jenny and Diana's first employee (paid occasionally in lomo, toys and quesadillas). Although she STILL refuses to go to college, business school or formal classes, she is currently carving her name into the world of kitschy doodling and painting, which, might i add, suits the store just fine. She spends most of her time huffing car paint at her real job, painting robots/monsters - check out her blog, talking for endless hours on the phone with Jen & Di and watching horror movies with her dude. A super smart lady... occassionally with bacon-colored hair, and always hilarious.

She is also good at, enjoys, or is known for the following: COFFEE, robots (it's important), anagrams, Boris Karloff, monsters, religious conspiracy, consiracy theories in general, UFO watching, long aimless drives in the car, singing at an unnreasonable decibel (the DIP crew is a journey cover band dubbed "the maxi-rads"), accepting being danced on by EVERYONE, collecting converse, steel toed shoes, shoes in general, Tetris, England's subcultures, scrabble, comic books, long walks to the sketchy gas station for malt liquor, maker's mark whisky, Asian influenced art, all inappropriate things, when people fulfill stereotypical obligations, koi, symmetry, anything blasphemous, laughing obnoxiously, finding excuses to not wear pants (= putting underwear over her tights), graffiti, photography (even if she's no good at it), learning more about the NYC outside of Brooklyn and LES.

She does not enjoy/is afraid of the following: spiders, your opinion, red pepper hummus thieves, gingers, oil paints, making frames, packing peanuts, static cling, wearing socks to bed, gold, dusty derby tracks, the mutants in the autobody industry, pointy shoes, square tipped shoes, the color pink generally, kidzbop commercials, the way microfiber anything sticks to your hands, gloves with fingers, people with multiple personalities.
