CBGB: Decades of Graffiti

The club and its graffiti are gone, but this book lives on!

Since opening in 1973, and shortly thereafter becoming the legendary downtown 'punk' scene venue that launched bands like Talking Heads, the Ramones, Television, Blondie, and countless others, CBGB has taken it on the wall. Layers of graffiti are documented with photographs by the club's owner, Hilly Kristal, as well as contemporary images and recollections from musicians about the graffiti. The verve of the lettering, the passionate, inebriated silliness of the words & messages echo the power of and innovation of the countless hours of music that have screamed off the stage. Without this book there would be no record.
